No. 1 Freeport girls volleyball returns to WPIAL championship game with big win over Seton LaSalle
WEXFORD — Losing the first set was not a wake-up call for Freeport.
It merely called for a change of strategy.
The top-seeded Yellowjackets (21-0) dropped the opening set of their WPIAL Class 3A girls volleyball semifinal 27-25 to No. 5 Seton LaSalle (17-5) before rallying for a 3-1 win at North Allegheny High School.
Freeport won the final three sets 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 to reach the district title match for the first time since 2022.
“We just changed our rotation after that first set and it worked,” Freeport head coach Tom Phillips said. “That, and the girls never quit. They worked so hard.”
Freeport junior Emily Boylan had five straight kills to begin the second set as the Yellowjackets opened up a 7-1 lead. The team was rarely challenged after that.
“No way were we gonna lose this,” Boylan said. “We worked together after that first set and got it done.”
Boylan had 19 kills, three aces and two blocks. Fellow junior Evie Tola had 21 kills.
“I love this team so much,” a jubilant Tola said. “No way would I want to do this with any other group of girls.”
Caylee Zembrzuski had five aces for Freeport.
The Yellowjackets will face Avonworth (18-3), a 3-1 winner over Waynesburg Central, for the 3A title at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peters Township’s AHN Arena.
