Door-to-door sales time grows
CRANBERRY TWP — The township supervisors Thursday night altered the times when people can solicit residents by selling products door to door.
Previously, anyone who obtained a permit was allowed to solicit during acceptable daylight hours, which had been defined as 10 a.m.to 7 p.m.
However, the supervisors pushed back that time to 8 p.m. The starting time of 10 a.m. remained unchanged.
Manager Jerry Andree said at the meeting that the supervisors changed the times after receiving feedback from a group.
“We had a complaint from that group that our hours were too restrictive,” Andree said.
The manager said that solicitations are a matter of free speech and are covered under the First Amendment.
He added that prior court cases have already determined acceptable hours for solicitations, and that the township’s previous hours were more stringent than what’s normally found in communities.
