Scholarships honor alums
BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College is memorializing four dedicated volunteers with permanent scholarships in their names, the college recently announced.
The scholarships — named for BC3 alumni Ray D. Steffler, Glenn Miller, Lucille Shapiro and Kathleen Sommers — are part of the school’s Alumni Legacy Scholarships, which are awarded annually to 20 children or grandchildren of former students who earned at least 30 credits at BC3.
The announcement was made at the college’s 20th anniversary reception for the scholarship program, at the Heaton Family Learning Commons. The scholarship namings were a surprise for the four honorees, who said they were shocked and honored.
Steffler is a BC3 trustee and has served as the board’s chairman since 1999. He earned an associate of science degree in business administration from BC3 in 1986, and is an aide to state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-21st.
Shapiro has served as a BC3 trustee since 1998, and is currently vice chairman of the board. She was part of the college’s first class in 1966, and graduated from the school in 1973 with an associate degree in social sciences.
Miller is a third-generation director with Thompson-Miller Funeral Home in Butler, and a 1981 graduate of BC3 with an associate of arts degree.
Sommers is BC3’s director of information technology, and earned an associate degree of computer information systems from the school in 1985. She has worked at the college since 1975 and lives in Butler Township.
