N.Y. mayor to visit Pa. on Trade Center memorial tour
NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg will travel to Pennsylvania this weekend along with a steel beam that is touring the country as part of the fundraising campaign he is leading for the World Trade Center memorial.
The event on Sunday in Pittsburgh will be the fourth stop for the 4-ton steel beam, but the first that the mayor will attend. His plans for the multistate tour have been closely watched because of speculation that he will run for president.
The beam is the centerpiece of the tour that began in Columbia, S.C. on the day before the sixth anniversary of the attacks; it has been to Raleigh, N.C. and is currently in Norfolk, Va.
At each stop, people are invited to contribute to the project and sign the beam, which will be used in the memorial built in New York.
Bloomberg has chaired the fundraising effort for the past year, and it is nearing its $350 million goal.
