North Catholic senior Chris Faber closed his high school career Tuesday by earning a medal at the PIAA Class 2A Boys Individual Golf Championship.

Faber shot a 3-over 75, giving him a two-day total of 148 at Penn State’s Blue Course. The effort landed him in a four-way tie for seventh place, with the top 10 golfers earning a medal.

“I qualified for states last year and tied for 12th place, one stroke away from medaling,” he said. “I was excited to get back and play better this year.”

A year ago, the championship tournament was held at Penn State’s White Course.

“There’s more drivable holes on that course,” Faber said. “The Blue Course is definitely more challenging.”

Faber birdied No. 5 Monday and Tuesday.

“It’s a par-5 (499 yards), and I played it differently both days,” he said. “In the first round, I hit a bad drive, then used a wedge to get out of trouble. (Tuesday) I stayed in the fairway with my drive, then used a 7-wood to get on the green and two-putted.”

Faber had a clean scoreboard in holes 10-18 Monday with a birdie and eight pars. That same stretch Tuesday proved more difficult. He totaled four bogies in six holes, but did close his round with a birdie on No. 18.

“I left myself in some bad spots off the tee today,” he said. “But it worked out.”

A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp carded a 77 in Round 2 and finished in a tie for 21st place with 151.

Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell won the state championship, defeating Annville-Cleona’s Ben Allwein on the second playoff hole after both golfers shot 140 in 36 regulation holes.

In Girls Class 2A, North Catholic’s Riley Kontul tied for 12th place, shooting 82 Tuesday and 166 for the tournament.

Shady Side Academy’s Alyssa Zhang claimed the state title with a 3-under 141.
