Training deals with gas well fires
HARMONY — Fire departments in Butler County are invited to participate in a training session that will educate firefighters on how to fight a fire at a natural gas well.
Neal Nanna, the chief of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Company, said the event is free. It will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 at Butler County Community College.
Anyone wanting to register to attend should contact Nanna at 724-452-4046.
He said the training sessions provide a good opportunity for firefighters to educate themselves on aspects of fighting fires at gas wells and gas processing plants since they are different from regular fires.
“They built a gas plant in my backyard here in Jackson Township, and it’s going to get extremely large,” Nanna said. “There’s no training anywhere in Pennsylvania that deals with gas plants and tanker cars and stuff like that, so this is a great opportunity.”
The training sessions, called “Introduction to Industrial Firefighting in a Gas Processing Facility,” will be sponsored by MarkWest Energy.
