Man, 19, charged after ATV chase

He leads police through Butler

A Parker teenager is accused of leading police on a weekend reckless high-speed chase through Butler — aboard an all-terrain vehicle.

The suspect, 19-year-old Austin A. George, traveled into woods to make his getaway. But city police quickly identified him.

It turned out that one of the pursuing officers had confronted George several weeks earlier at a convenience store, where the teen had ridden the same ATV, according to court documents.

The officer at the time warned the teen that ATVs are not permitted on roads.

Police on Monday got an arrest warrant for George on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment.

Additionally, he faces 21 traffic tickets.

Officers were on an unrelated call about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when they spotted a white and yellow Polaris RZR traveling east in the 500 block of West New Castle Street. Two young men were riding the vehicle.

Police hit their emergency lights and siren but the ATV did not stop. Instead, the suspect sped up and raced through the intersection at Broad Street.

The vehicle was traveling about 70 mph when it made it northbound onto North Chestnut Street, a police affidavit said.

While still speeding, police said, George ran several stop signs before going the wrong way on a one-way street. He eventually turned east onto West Pearl Street and traveled onto a sidewalk.

The ATV did not slow down as it sped through the intersections of North Bluff, North Washington and North Main streets.

During the chase, police said, George turned onto Main Street and into the path of a southbound car. The driver of the car had to swerve to avoid the ATV.

Moments later, police passed the ATV and tried to stop it near the driveway of a business in the 600 block of North Main Street.

However, George veered around the patrol car, narrowly missing it before fishtailing then traveling up a hill in back of the business.

Police saw the ATV headed into the woods behind the Towers Apartments. Officers walked into the woods and found the unoccupied vehicle wedged between a tree and the hillside.

A short time later, police spotted two people, believed to be George and his passenger, near a water tower at the top of North Chestnut Street Extension.

The two got away but police used the ATV’s license plate to help identify George, who has a suspended driver’s license.
