Woman allegedly breaks into homes

Caitland Ringler
She faces burglary, theft charges

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — A Butler woman is behind bars following her arraignment last week on charges she broke into a pair of township homes on the same day.

The suspect, 20-year-old Caitland N. Ringler, is no stranger to police.

She is awaiting preliminary hearings or trials in six unrelated criminal cases in Butler County.

State police on Feb. 22 arrested Ringler moments after she broke into a house on Barton Lane in Slippery Rock Township. The owner returned home and called authorities after discovering the break-in.

The victim told police he heard noises coming from the back of his house and when he went to inspect he saw the suspect running away, according to court document.

He also noticed a window was broken.

While the homeowner waited for police, the defendant allegedly returned to the scene of the crime.

She apparently came back to get her purse she had left behind on the porch, police said. She spoke briefly with the victim before fleeing again.

But by then, Trooper Jessica Clouse arrived and caught Ringler, who was bleeding from her hands. Her clothes also were bloodied.

Police later found blood, believed to be from the suspect, in the victim’s house.

A search of her purse turned up a knife as well as items — prescription medication, jewelry and a digital picture frame — apparently taken from another house.

Police identified the other house, on Route 173 in Slippery Rock Township, from the label on a prescription pill bottle in the purse.

Troopers discovered that house, too, had been burglarized. A muddy boot print outside the house matched the tread of the boots Ringler was wearing, documents said.

Ringler was placed in the Butler County Prison on a pair of warrants following her arrest Feb. 22.

District Judge William O’Donnell on Friday arraigned her on two counts each of burglary and trespass and charges of theft and criminal mischief.

She is held on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at O’Donnell’s office in Slippery Rock.

Ringler faces other preliminary hearings this month on previous cases.

In the most recent of those earlier cases, Butler Township police on Feb. 19 charged her with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia stemming from a one-vehicle crash Feb. 9 in the 200 block of Old Plank Road.

Ringler was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle that ran into a house. Police said they found heroin and other contraband in the vehicle. She suffered minor injuries, police said.

The driver, Kurtis S. Wentling, 33, of Butler, was arrested on drug possession charges as well as a felony count of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Ringler also faces drugged driving charges in connection with a traffic stop New Year’s Day in Brady Township. In addition to driving under influence of a controlled substance in that arrest, she is charged with drug possession and false identification to police.

Butler police in a separate case charged her with giving officers a bogus name on Jan. 11 when they were called for a disturbance at an apartment on the 400 block of West North Street. A hearing in that case is set for March 7.

Meanwhile, trials are pending against Ringler in still more criminal cases.

In one of those cases, she is charged with theft and receiving stolen property for allegedly stealing jewelry in March 2015 from a home in Harrisville. She subsequently sold the items March 31 at a gold store in Center Township, state police said.

The other cases in county court are for drugged driving June 24 in Slippery Rock Township and drug possession May 4 in Butler.
