Couple accused in theft of car
Butler police Wednesday arrested a city couple wanted on charges they stole an unoccupied car that was parked with the engine running outside a Washington County drugstore last month.
Tiffany Nichol Hilliard, 28, and her boyfriend, Joshua K. Greaves, 32, are in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail each.
City police had been on the lookout for the defendants after they learned Canonsburg police had arrest warrants for the couple.
Authorities suspect the pair were in Canonsburg on Oct. 18 when Hilliard saw an unattended Hyundai Sonata with its engine running outside a Walgreen’s pharmacy. She allegedly hopped in and began to take off in it, court documents said.
The owner, who was with her boyfriend at a nearby movie kiosk, saw the thief and tried to prevent the getaway. The owner grabbed the door handle and yelled for the defendant to stop.
Instead, authorities said, Hilliard sped up and away, jerking the owner’s hand off the door. She stopped a short way away, long enough to pick up Greaves, who was waiting across the street.
Canonsburg police, aided by surveillance video at the drugstore, later identified the suspects, and obtained warrants for their arrests.
Hilliard is charged with robbery of a vehicle, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment and theft. Greaves is charged with conspiracy.
Detectives investigating the case notified Butler police and asked them to check for the defendants at their home.
Police went to the apartment in the 400 block of West North Street but neither was there.
Shortly before noon Wednesday, however, an officer spotted them walking on North Jackson Street. Both were arrested without incident.
Police said Hilliard was searched and found with four stamp bags of suspected heroin. She is charged with misdemeanor drug possession.
Hilliard and Greaves are being held in the county prison on detainers stemming from the Washington County case.
Court records showed that Greaves also is wanted on a felony warrant in a June 27 theft case in Mercer County.
