Turkey Bowl fights diabetes
The Turkey Bowl was sponsored Friday by the Mars High School Sophomore Class Council and the Interact Club.
Students in grades nine through 12 donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and each homeroom that raised at least $20 nominated a bowler for the event. Students in the homeroom that raised the most money received a pizza party and “Turkey Bowl” T-shirts.
Participants planned to bowl with a wrapped, frozen turkey that would then be donated to a food pantry, but officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said using a frozen turkey would cause multiple contaminations. They used a bowling ball instead.
The Turkey Bowl was the idea of sophomore Brett Jackson, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2010. Jackson earned two awards last year for raising $38,000 in the Western Pennsylvania Walk to Cure Diabetes.
