Arrow would point to Harmony

Council OKs promotional sign

HARMONY — The borough and the Harmony Business Association will work to erect a new promotional sign that can be seen from Route 68.

The sign is planned for “the triangle,” which is at the intersection of Main Street and Route 68.

Borough council voted Monday to approve the sign and the use of Harmony’s name.

Mayor Cathy Rape said she hopes the sign will help attract visitors to the borough and make them aware of where it is.

“I see people at the museum sometimes who say ‘we didn’t even know Harmony was here,’” she said.

The estimated cost to build and install the sign is $8,800, which will be covered by contributions from members of the business association, donations from the community and a contribution from the borough. Rape personally will seek donations from businesses.

Council President Greg Such said he wants to apply for a grant from the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau for the sign.

Though council did not commit to make any financial contribution, council member Don Sims said the borough probably would be able to give about $2,000 in a few months.

It will be made by Sign Innovation, the company that also designed the wood sign in Harmony Square.

A proposed drawing of the sign includes an arrow pointing down Main Street and a list of attractions such as shops, dining, parks, boat launch and historic sites.

Josh Meeder, representing the business association, said the sign will be visible if placed in the middle of the triangle, and no trees would need to be cut down.

The stone monument in the triangle would need to be moved to another location in the borough, he said.

The triangle is owned by the borough, but is leased to McCrackin Motorsports, which the borough also will ask to approve the sign.
