Woman accused of welfare fraud

Anonymous tip leads to charges

A Butler woman is accused of illegally receiving more than $1,000 in federal food stamps in 2013.

The Pennsylvania Inspector General’s office this week charged Laura A. Antonelli, 30, with a misdemeanor count of fraudulently obtaining Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

In applying for food stamps at the Department of Public Welfare’s county assistance office in Butler in March 2013, Antonelli reported that she was living with her three children, her fiance and his child, authorities said.

But following an anonymous tip to Antonelli’s casework supervisor, investigators discovered that two of her children were not living at home.

Rather, those children since September 2012 had been attending school and living at the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Dauphin County.

The Hershey school is a private, philanthropic boarding school that educates children from low-income families.

Authorities allege that between Jan. 1 and April 30, 2013, Antonelli fraudulently received $1,054 in SNAP benefits.

A preliminary hearing is set for March 9 before District Judge Pete Shaffer.
