County sports hall moving to government center

Display cases had no permanent site

The Butler County Sports Hall of Fame is headed to a new home.

Two display cases showcasing hall of fame inductees will be displayed in the county government center along the third-floor hallway, which leads to the walkway into the courthouse.

Dan Cunningham, hall of fame board president, said in an interview that the government center on Diamond Street is an ideal place for the display.

“That’s going to be a terrific location,” Cunningham said. “It’s such great access.”

He said other county buildings in Pennsylvania and Ohio have similar exhibits recognizing athletic achievements.

Cunningham said the hall of fame, which was established in 1966, hasn’t had a permanent site for its display for 10 years.

The items have been in storage during that time.

Although the Days Inn on Route 8 in Butler Township no longer served as the location for the exhibit, it continued to host the hall of fame’s annual banquet.

The county commissioners said in interviews they support the display going in the government center.

Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, said the government center is an appropriate choice.

“It is a countywide organization,” McCarrier said about the hall of fame.

Commissioners Dale Pinkerton and Jim Eckstein agreed the display belongs in a county building.

The commissioners are set Wednesday to accept the display cases, which will be donated by the hall of fame.

Cunningham said the cabinets will be constructed and installed by the end of the school year.

“We’re thrilled, to say the least,” he said.

The hall of fame exhibit covers more than 300 athletes who played for existing high schools and colleges as well as former high schools.
