Woman not liable for $135 flu shot
GIBSONIA — A woman whose insurance was billed $135 for a $22 flu shot will instead get the shot for free.
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center spokesman Frank Raczkiewicz said no patients will be liable for more than $22 and that the hospital network is paying for Janet Mekovsky's shot to make up for her inconvenience.
The Hampton Township woman told a Pittsburgh newspaper she was prepared to pay $22 for the shot at a UPMC Passavant hospital flu clinic last month when a nurse told her that insurance would cover it.
Mekovsky says her insurance carrier was billed $135 before negotiating a lower price, $64.98. However, the insurance wouldn't cover the cost.
UPMC officials say they bill all insurance companies $135 for the shots.
