Worth Twp. man faces 2 DUI charges

He was arrested twice in 31 hours

EVANS CITY — A Worth Township man is headed for court on charges in two separate drunken driving arrests — only 31 hours apart.

James M. Bell IV, 31, on Tuesday waived his preliminary hearing in each case filed at District Judge Wayne Seibel’s office.

Lancaster Township police about 7:45 p.m. March 4 arrested Bell after finding his 2005 Chevrolet Equinox blocking both lanes of traffic on Whitestown Road.

The suspect told police he ran out of gasoline on his way from Butler to Slippery Rock, according to court documents.

Officer Melanie Hart said Bell smelled of alcohol, and he appeared to be impaired. He admitted he was drunk, police said.

A blood test later showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.147 percent. A level of 0.08 is considered intoxicated under state law.

At 2:45 a.m. March 6, state police were called to a one-vehicle crash in Connoquenessing Township and found Bell had crashed the same sport utility vehicle he was driving when arrested March 4.

The vehicle was stuck in deep snow and ice, police said. Bell was crying, documents said, while holding onto his car, apparently to steady himself.

Trooper James Long said Bell reeked of alcohol and appeared so intoxicated that police declined to give him any sobriety field tests for fear he could hurt himself.

This time, police said, his blood-alcohol level was 0.168 percent, according to the results of a breath test.

Bell appeared Tuesday before Seibel without an attorney and waived DUI charges in both cases to court.

He left the courtroom without comment.
