Sweden's Enqvist retires from tennis
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Thomas Enqvist is retiring from tennis after 19 ATP titles and a Grand Slam final, he told a Swedish newspaper for a story published today.
The 32-year-old Swede said he can no longer take the physical strain of playing.
"It feels sad but unfortunately my body can't take top level competition anymore," Enqvist told Stockholm newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.
Enqvist made his professional debut in 1989 and won his first ATP title two years later. He won the Davis Cup with Sweden in 1997 and reached the Australian Open final in 1999, losing to Yevgeny Kafelnikov in four sets.
