State police barracks renovation
Work continues on the $3.5 million renovation project at the state police barracks on New Castle Road in Butler Township. The project includes a two-story, 6,000-square-foot addition for the patrol unit, indoor renovations and an outdoor rain garden for water runoff. The 66-year-old building is on 10 acres along New Castle Road and is the legacy of Col. Cecil M. Wilhelm, who was police commissioner from 1943 to 1955. Before him, barracks on the western side of the state were leased. The Butler barracks is the headquarters for troopers in Butler, Beaver, Armstrong, Mercer and New Castle. The project is expected to be done by November.
