Newman Center gets praise

GROVE CITY — Grove City College’s Newman Club has been voted one of the 50 Best Newman Centers by Best College Reviews.

The college’s club was ranked 28th by the organization. It is dedicated to educating students of all faiths who are interested in Catholicism.

The club offers regular Mass and rides to Mass, book clubs, dinners, social events and regular meetings, and is affiliated with the Church of the Beloved Disciple in Grove City.

Club President Rebecca McLaughlin says the group’s reach extends beyond campus. For the past several years, some members have led and participate in an inner city outreach trip to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where participants volunteer at a convent.

Newman centers are named after John H. Newman, a 19th century English intellectual and Catholic convert whose work “The Idea of a University” still is studied today. The centers are a place for young Catholics to “further religious ideals and goals through prayer, study, religious services, community service and relationship-building activities,” said Grove City College.
