Brockway man pleads guilty to assaulting Butler County Prison guards
A Brockway man being held in Butler County Prison pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges filed by Butler County detectives for assaulting corrections officers in the jail and possession of a shank made from the handle of a toothbrush.
Elijah James Claypoole, 27, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of possession of a weapon in a plea agreement in Butler County Common Pleas Court.
The agreement calls for a sentence of 12 to 30 months in state prison followed by 12 months of probation. Judge Joseph Kubit scheduled sentencing Oct. 20.
Claypoole is being held in jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Detectives filed charges following a March 29 incident they said took place when Claypoole was being escorted to a cell by a corrections officer. Claypoole turned toward, yelled at and lunged at the officer, according to court documents.
When Claypoole entered the cell doorway, detectives said he struck the right side of the officer’s neck and pulled him into the cell, which was out of the view of cameras.
Another officer then helped separate the two and the officers backed out of the cell. When one officer reached down to grab a hat that fell off during the assault, Claypoole tried to grab them again, according to detectives.
Claypoole was eventually restrained after usage of a Taser.
While searching Claypoole, officers found a 4-inch shank made from the handle of a toothbrush hidden in his sock.
