Flacco truely fortunate

Joe Flacco is the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

Let me rephrase that.

Joe Flacco is the highest-paid football player on planet Earth.

My goodness, what a strange world we live in.

Heading into the season, such a statement would only be recognized in sarcasm.

But that’s what one great — and fortunate — postseason run can do for an NFL quarterback. It’s a fickle life, with failure and success sometimes out of their control.

The Baltimore Ravens signal caller inked a six-year deal worth a whopping $120.6 million and the Super Bowl MVP has plenty of people to thank for it.

We’ll start with Ray Lewis, whose attention-hoarding act took the spotlight off Flacco as the Ravens entered the playoffs. The lack of glare likely made life a bit easier on the quarterback, as he’s often bombarded with “Can you win the big game?”

With Lewis running the media sideshow, questions were followed by a sermon from the middle linebacker.

Perhaps Flacco can pony up the cash to buy Lewis a new Bible. Maybe reading it this time around, the NFL’s unofficial preacher will realize there’s no mention of football.

Flacco should certainly send a hefty piece of his $29 million signing bonus to Denver defensive back Rahim Moore, whose blown coverage allowed Jacoby Jones to slip past the Broncos for a 70-yard touchdown pass and force overtime in Baltimore’s 38-35 double-OT victory at Mile High Stadium.

Moore’s problem equaled more money.

Flacco’s deal was constructed to give the Ravens a better shot at keeping Anquan Boldin for the 2013 season. Either way, Flacco should cough up some cash for his receiver.

Boldin came through in the AFC Championship — unlike Lee Evans the prior year — and held on to a pair of touchdown passes as the Ravens upset the Patriots to reach the Super Bowl.

Lose a Super Bowl, you’re the guy who came up short.

Win a Super Bowl, you’re getting all the headlines, all the glory — apparently all the money — and a trip to Disney World as the cherry on top.

Flacco’s first paycheck should be awarded to his offensive line for holding off the likes of Patrick Willis, Justin Smith and the rest of a typically ferocious San Francisco defense.

The second paycheck should be signed over to his defense for stopping the 49ers’ final possession in the red zone with a chance to complete the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.

The third paycheck should be handed to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh for inexplicably opting to pass the ball with the game on the line after running it down Baltimore’s throat earlier in the possession.

It might seem like a lot to be giving away, but Flacco — the quarterback who once upon a time wasn’t even good enough for Pitt — has plenty of money to spread around.
