ZELIENOPLE — The borough community park and neighboring Jackson Township are seeking public input for future recreation developments.

Both municipalities are conducting surveys on numerous media.

“The study will determine how much interest there is,” said Don Pepe, borough manager and parks board member. “We’re trying to find out what people would like to see.”

Jackson Township supervisors have discussed potential recreation opportunities that will join both municipalities, including a bike trail from the Park and Ride on Route 528 to the borough’s downtown area.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Pepe said of the connecting trail. “It pulls the two municipalities together and allows Jackson residents access to Zelienople and vice versa.”

“There is a lot of running activity here,” he continued.

Jackson’s preliminary budget for next year also addresses recreation in the area.

The township will donate $25,000 to the borough community park and appropriate $110,000 to acquire property for the proposed trail project.

“The township has begun and plans to continue donating to the Zelienople Park Board, viewing Zelienople Community Park as a regional park,” township manager Chris Rearick said in the budget.

The township’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan also has assisted in requiring developers to dedicate land for recreational use or otherwise pay a fee to fund recreational projects.

Other potential ideas discussed by local officials include a new hiking trail, improvements to canoe launches, ball fields and a cross-country skiing area.

Zelienople budgets between $80,000 and $90,000 each year toward recreation, Pepe said.

He said the township’s donation to the borough adds to that number.

Surveys can be found on the community park’s and township’s Facebook pages and the borough’s community newsletter, parks board member Jen Semel said.

Semel said she expects the survey study to be finished in January.
