Linda Spohn's opposition to Plan B

ameshaa@aol.com

Opposition to the offering of Plan B to sexual assault victims, as evidenced by Linda Spohn's letter to the editor, is entirely religiously based and factually wrong. Her opposition centers on the fact that Plan B can prevent a pregnancy by stopping implantation of an embryo into the uterine wall of a woman. She characterizes this as abortion, which is not correct. A pregnancy is said to occur, medically speaking, only after an embryo is implanted in the walls of the female reproductive system. The fusion of sperm and egg is not the equivalent to pregnancy. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. Where no pregnancy has occurred, abortion is not possible. Other drugs such as Mifeprex can induce abortions, but not Plan B. Plan B is clearly not an abortifacient, but even if it was there is still no rational excuse for opposing it. Plan B is a vital component of reproductive freedom and a crucial part of caring for sexual assault victims.
