Tilly & Renay
I think Tilly's point was how can teachers be expected to be judged on their job based on a STUDENT'S performace. I know she said something to the effect that some kids don't do anything, but part of the reason may be of things that are going on in their lives. Take the PSSAs for example. Communities and the State expect passing test scores in schools. Well, that is all good, but when students miss school because of issues they are dealing with, why is this accountability placed on teachers? It doesn't make sense. I think that is the point she was trying to make on merit pay. Also, this goes along with teachers only having a "part-time" job and Renay's comments. There are SEVERAL programs that schools have started over the past several years in order to help students with issues. There are numberous student assistant programs for drugs or alcohol, peer mediation, STARFISH clubs, and the like. Who do people think runs these activities? They are dedicated teachers who spend many hours beyond instructional time organizing and implementing these programs.
Although I take NO SIDE with regard to the SV strike, after reading all of the editorials and discussion posts on here, people have to be more understanding, patient, and prayerful. While negotiations are at a stand still, both sides are within their legal rights. Now, people may not agree with one side or another, but until the law changes, this is the way it is going to be. I am amazed at people bashing the SV teachers, yet will be the first ones to fight for their rights within the law with other things others may not agree with...
