PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell is one of a partisan cross section meeting with President Obama to talk about federal spending to shore up the nation's crumbling infrastructure.

The Democrat will join Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent, for the meeting today at the White House.

Bloomberg has been working with the two governors as part of his Building America's Future coalition. They want to increase national investment in infrastructure projects.

PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell is calling on Sunoco officials to rescind their plan to cut 750 jobs.Rendell said it is "unconscionable" for the oil company to be laying off workers when it made a $776 million profit last year. He made his argument in a letter sent Thursday to Sunoco's board of directors and later released publicly.Rendell said he understands some companies must lay off workers to stay afloat during the recession. But he said this is not the case with Sunoco.The governor said he learned earlier Thursday Pennsylvania lost 41,000 jobs last month.

HARRISBURG — The chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court wants monthly progress reports from Luzerne County, where two judges pleaded guilty to corruption.Chief Justice Ron Castille made the request of county President Judge Chester Muroski, who has been making reforms in the wake of the scandal.Former county judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan pleaded guilty last month to fraud after prosecutors accused them of taking kickbacks to send juvenile offenders to private detention centers.Two other court officials were charged as part of an ongoing federal probe into corruption at the courthouse in Wilkes-Barre.

JOHNSTOWN — Peg Luksik, who ran for governor three times in the 1990s, formally announced she is challenging Arlen Specter for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2010.Luksik said Americans are tired of "the arrogance of Washington's elitists." She made her announcement Thursday while seated at a kitchen table in Johnstown.Luksik, a 53-year-old Johnstown resident who got involved in statewide politics as an anti-abortion activist, ran for governor as a Republican in 1990, but lost the primary.Conservative Pat Toomey is expected to join the race, but Luksik said she is undeterred. The 79-year-old Specter plans to seek a sixth term.

HARRISBURG — The acting chief of Pennsylvania's Labor and Industry Department was too drunk to sign a citation for public drunkenness, according to Harrisburg police.Sandi Vito entered a rehabilitation facility last week, shortly after news stories were published about the incident at the bar of a downtown hotel.The Patriot-News of Harrisburg published a copy of the citation in Thursday's editions. It said Vito, 43, was "extremely intoxicated" and the line for her signature contained the entry "too drunk to sign."Labor Department spokesman Troy Thompson noted his boss had expressed her "sincere remorse" in a written statement she issued upon entering the rehab program.
