HOUSTON A test run Monday of the new $175 million casino at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino backed up traffic on highways south of Pittsburgh.

The new, permanent casino held an invitation-only test run to help state gaming officials determine if the facility should open as scheduled Wednesday.

State and local police reported traffic jams as long as two miles on Route 19, with resulting delays on the interstate.

The Meadows' temporary slots parlor opened in June 2007 with 1,825 machines. The new facility has more than 3,700 machines, more dining and entertainment areas, and space to watch and bet on harness racing.

GETTYSBURG A Gettysburg College student charged in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend admitted committing the crime, according to an affidavit filed by police.Kevin Schaeffer, 21, told investigators sophomore Emily Silverstein came to his apartment early Thursday and that he killed her during a fight in his bedroom, according to the affidavit obtained Monday from a district court.Gettysburg police found Silverstein dead in the bathtub, partially covered by a shower curtain, police Sgt. Kevin Wilson said.
