HARRISBURG — Advocates for Pennsylvania's judges are warning that Gov. Ed Rendell's budget lacks funding for scores of judges and could set up a constitutional crisis.

Judges from all three of the statewide appellate courts appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday to discuss a $34 million gap between what they say the judiciary needs and what Rendell requests in his budget.

Supreme Court Justice Thomas Saylor says the lion's share of the projected gap for next year is the lack of funding for 60 county judges and 90 district judges.

Court officials say they reshuffled funds in recent years to offset similar shortfalls and recovered the money later from the state. But they say this year's gap is much larger than past ones and could interfere with judicial operations.

PITTSBURGH — Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is putting the finishing touches on its new $625 million, state-of the-art facility as it plans to move some 150 patients, one by one, from its old building a couple miles away.Officials say they've been rehearsing Saturday's move for two years and expect it should take eight to 12 hours to move all the patients.Already, the new facility is seeing people on an outpatient basis and a research center opened in December.The bright and colorful new campus is designed to put children at ease and feel less like a traditional hospital.

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry says three caves in western Pennsylvania will remain closed to the public to protect the bats hibernating there.The goal is to prevent the deadly white-nose syndrome from infecting the bats in Coon and Lemon Hole caves, southeast of Blairsville, and Barton Cave, near Uniontown.The syndrome has killed hundreds of thousands of bats from Vermont to West Virginia. It has been found in Mifflin, Centre, Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania.
