PHILADELPHIA — Acknowledging "mixed feelings," Gov. Ed Rendell asked a federal judge to weigh the good with the bad in sentencing former state Sen. Vincent Fumo next week.

In a letter to the judge who will sentence Fumo, Rendell noted that his sometime political foe had steered "hundreds of millions" in government money to his native city during 30 years at the Statehouse and said Fumo also had "dishonored" their profession and "cast doubt on the rest of us."

"I do believe, however, that we are all complex people," Rendell wrote. "This sometimes ruthless politician had and still has a deep sense of social responsibility. ... It should count for a great deal."

Fumo, the long-powerful Philadelphia Democrat, has filed a flurry of legal motions seeking to put off what could be the final court date in his $3.5 million fraud case. At 66, he faces a decade or more in prison.

Jurors in March convicted Fumo of all 137 pending counts after a five-month trial, and found his longtime aide, Ruth Arnao, guilty of all 45 counts.

U.S. District Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter has so far denied Fumo's requests for a new trial or a sentencing delay. In an exhaustive 128-page ruling last month, he said the jury had plenty of evidence to support its verdict.

The jury found that Fumo defrauded the state Senate, a charity and a museum over many years. It also found that Arnao, who ran the charity, helped him raid its coffers.
