I grew up in Butler and moved to another state 25 years ago. Teachers in my present state of residence are paid a much lower salary in comparison to cost of living than in Pa. A new teacher just starting out is not able to afford even a modest apartment on his or her own, but would need a roommate or other type of assistance. Information is available online as to various states and their teachers' salaries. Pennsylvania teachers are relatively well paid, although certainly teaching as a whole is not a lucrative profession.

My son recently graduated from college and our local public high school did not prepare him well either. But you can't depend on the school to educate your child. Ultimately the responsibility lies with the parent and the child.
