Police: Pittsburgh man stole, copied, cashed victim's check
A Pittsburgh man has been accused of stealing nearly $6,000 in a check-cashing scheme.
Cranberry Township Police on Tuesday charged Joshua K. Stadterman, 31, with felony access device fraud and misdemeanor theft by deception.
According to court documents, Stadterman has been issued a summons to appear in court for a preliminary hearing scheduled May 14 before District Judge David Kovach.
According to charging documents, Stadterman stole a check from a Cranberry Township mailbox, then made duplicates of those checks.
Police said the victim is a nursing home resident whose son, a township resident, is her power of attorney. Police said NexTier Bank alerted the son to three suspicious withdrawals.
“The three checks were cashed at three separate NexTier Bank branches on the same day and in a matter of hours,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. “It was determined all three checks were made payable to the defendant, Josh Stadterman.”
Police said they also have video evidence of Stadterman cashing the checks, which came to a total of $5,841 in cash.
According to the documents, one of the branches was in Cranberry Township, while the other two were in Allegheny County. Police said the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office has deferred to allow for prosecution in Butler County.
