Manning, Favre combine for nine TD passes Sunday
What a great day to play pitch and catch, NFL style.
Peyton Manning and Brett Favre looked like a pair of schoolyard slingers Sunday in Indianapolis' 45-31 victory over Green Bay. Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper, Aaron Brooks and Marc Bulger all threw for more than 300 yards.
Manning helped receivers Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley have career games and Favre did the same for Javon Walker. Isaac Bruce, Randy Moss and rookie Roy Williams dominated secondaries, too.
"From their standpoint, I'm sure they thought they could score every time," Favre said of the Colts, "and so did we."
They almost did.
Manning sizzled in the first half with five touchdown passes. He wound up with 393 yards passing, 247 in the first quarter alone. It was the most TD throws in one half since Tommy Kramer had five in 1996.
"I heard coach Dungy say we may throw it 50 times and I just looked at him and said 'Did I just hear that right?' " Manning said. "We wanted to throw until they got softened up, until they got out of their man-to-man. Finally, in the second half, they did that, which allowed us to have a little running game."
Wayne made 11 receptions for 184 yards and a TD, while Brandon Stokley had eight catches for 110 yards and two scores - both set career highs for yardage. Walker had 11 receptions for 198 yards and three TDs and set a career high in catches and yards.
At Indianapolis, the wild start saw five touchdown passes in the first 11 minutes, three by Manning and two by Favre, a pace that would have added up to 175 points between them. Indianapolis (2-1) did not have a running play in the first quarter and Manning was 23-of-31 for 320 yards at the half. The Colts gained just 96 yards total in the second and third quarters, but Green Bay (1-2) was victimized by Colts defensive backs Jason David and Nick Harper. David stripped Walker after he caught Favre's pass just across midfield in the fourth quarter, setting up Edgerrin James' 1-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left.
At Detroit, the Eagles moved to 3-0 with McNabb passing for 356 yards and two touchdowns and running for a score. Terrell Owens caught six passes for 107 yards and a TD.McNabb has thrown eight TDs and run for two without throwing an interception.Williams had nine receptions for 135 yards, with two TDs for the second straight week, but the Lions (2-1) fell short of going 3-0 for the first time since 1980.

Although Brooks and Bulger piled up the yards in the air, a key for New Orleans (2-1) was substitute RB Aaron Stecker. He had his first career 100-yard day filling in for injured Deuce McAllister, and ran 42 yards for a score.Brooks calmly directed the tying and winning drive and threw for 316 yards and a TD. John Carney kicked five field goals to end the Rams' 15-game regular-season winning streak at home. The Rams (1-2) took the lead on Marc Bulger's 19-yard scramble with 28 seconds to go before a poor squib kick helped the Saints reach field goal range for Carney to tie it.
At Nashville, Fred Taylor's 1-yard touchdown run with 9 seconds left won it. Jacksonville is 3-0 despite scoring just 35 points this season, but the Jaguars have allowed only 28.The Jaguars sacked Steve McNair three times and knocked him out in the fourth quarter with a bruised sternum, which hospitalized the 2003 co-MVP. Tennessee (1-2) has lost two straight at home after going 7-1 at The Coliseum last season.
At Seattle, the 49ers (0-3) saw the end of their 420-game regular-season streak of not being blanked, an NFL record. "It sure was nice to be in that position. It was even better to go out and do it."

Collins led four scoring drives, completing 16 of 27 passes for 228 yards and one touchdown. After Jerry Rice's record receptions streak was snapped last week, Tim Brown owns the longest active run, and he extended it to 176 games. Brown's 16-yard TD reception with 10:45 left was his 100th career touchdown catch - and the Bucs' first offensive TD of the season.Brown passed Don Hutson for fourth in career touchdown catches. He received a warm ovation from the otherwise hostile Raider Nation. Brown, who spent his first 16 NFL seasons with the Raiders (2-1), was released during training camp when he refused to accept a drastically reduced role.
At Cincinnati, Jamal Lewis continued his habit of rushing for at least 100 yards against the Bengals (1-2). He ran for 186, including a 75-yard touchdown sprint.
