Tammy, in case you do not realize it, teachers are already paid part-time salaries. If you compare teaching salaries to other equivalent occupations in terms of skill level and education, teachers are paid less. In many cases, it is significantly less. A major reason teachers in the past, and even today, have not been paid to the level of occupations with similar skill levels and education is because of the whole "part-time job, part-time pay" argument. If you do some basic research, you will find that teachers's starting salaries are lower than almost any other occupation which requires a bachelor's degree and a certification/professional license, which then negates the whole "part-time job, part-time pay" argument because teachers are already paid less. Like you, teachers are not paid overtime for doing work beyond their work day. Ask a kindergarten teacher how much time they put in during the summer putting their room together. Ask a high school math teacher how much time they spend outside of regular school hours grading paper. Do they get paid overtime for doing that extra work? Teaching will seem less and less like a part-time job if you start asking those questions of teachers. Just because students are in school for 180 days, does not mean teachers only work 180 days. Tammy, it also seemed like you were complaining a lot about your job in your post. Perhaps you should go back to school and find a different job if you complain about how much you work.
