I agree with James Matson's letter to the editor regarding "abstinence-only" education in which he writes, "only fools would try to put all their eggs in one basket." The sad thing is that the fools are American taxpayers who are forced to fund this counterproductive approach to sexual education entirely derived from religious dogma. According to statistics published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, by 2005 $1.5 billion had been spent on these programs despite any indication that they were effective. President Bush's 2009 budget funds these activities at $204 million and stipulates that a recipient of these funds is forbidden from conducting any education on contraceptives as a condition of the funding--an absurd, backward, and irrational approach that must be opposed.
