PITTSBURGH — A man who was about three weeks from moving into a foreclosed home that he had bought and was renovating discovered this week that a contractor mistakenly demolished it along with a neighboring house.

The home in the city's West End neighborhood had been condemned, but city officials issued an order halting demolition after Andre Hall bought it in November. Hall had replaced the windows, among other work, and arrived to do more work Monday when he found a backhoe sitting on top of the house.

“My dream is done now,” Hall told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Someone needs to man up and take responsibility for this.”

John Jennings, acting head of the city's Bureau of Building Inspection, said the city notified the contractor on Nov. 3 that the house was no longer on the demolition list. Jennings said the house next door was supposed to be taken down but the contractor demolished Hall's home as well.

MONROEVILLE — Part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike had to be closed near Pittsburgh for more than an hour after a driver barreled through a yard, crashed onto the highway then struck a concrete barrier.Police in Monroeville say the driver is listed in serious condition following the crash Tuesday evening.Investigators say the unidentified man lost control of his truck on a local road, passed through a yard then smashed into a barrier in the middle of the turnpike. The crash blocked the eastbound lanes of the highway for a little more than an hour.Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole says more than 50 empty and unopened cans of alcohol were found in the truck. Investigators are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor.
