STATE COLLEGE — Penn State is planning to spend up to $35 million to convert its coal-fired steam plant to natural gas.

University officials said Friday that the switch will reduce carbon emissions.

Since 2009, the university has been considering its options for upgrading the State College coal-fired plant in anticipation of stiffer federal regulations.

A student group has been pushing the university to switch from burning coal to a greener energy.
