PITTSBURGH — A Western Pennsylvania man who spent more than a decade and a half in prison before winning his freedom after DNA evidence failed to link him to a 1988 murder is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review a federal judge's decision that the county cannot be held liable for violation of his rights.

Drew Whitley, 55, of Braddock was sentenced to life in prison in the 1988 murder of 22-year-old Noreen Malloy. After his release in 2006, Whitley filed suit against Allegheny County and six detectives, alleging that he was subject to malicious prosecution and denied a fair trial and that he was targeted because he is black.

OLD FORGE — An eastern Pennsylvania teachers union has given notice that it intends to strike during the time scheduled for state reading and math tests.The Old Forge Education Association says a walkout would begin March 21 — the start of the second week of the district's 10-day window for the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment standardized tests. A strike lasting more than a week would run into the assessments in writing and science.
