Clement gets his 1st win since July

CHICAGO - Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Clement finally got the run support his efforts deserve when the Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 13-4 Tuesday at Wrigley Field.

Clement (9-11), who had been 0-2 in four starts since winning at Milwaukee July 26, struck out eight in six innings, allowing seven hits.

"To get those runs with our pitching staff, I think we are going to win a lot of games," Clement said.

Clement didn't allow a hit in the first four innings, then gave up two-run homers in the fifth to Bill Hall and Scott Podsednik.

"I think, if anything, I was trying to rush because of the rain, just wanted to get the game completed," Clement said.

Clement, who has a 3.31 ERA, is struggling to get wins because of a lack of run support.

"He was struggling a little bit, but he got some runs he hadn't got in a long time," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

Glendon Rusch finished for his second save.

Moises Alou helped Clement's and the Cubs' causes when he homered twice and had a career-high six RBI, and Derrek Lee hit a grand slam to send the Brewers to their seventh straight loss.

Alou hit a three-run homer in the first inning, a two-run homer in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh as Chicago won for the sixth time in seven games and opened a one-game lead in the NL wild-card race over San Francisco. Alou, who has 31 homers, reached 30 for the third time in his career.

"We always knew we had a good lineup. I guess we needed a wake-up call," Alou said. "Time is running out. Playoff chances are right there, so let's go take it. We have some momentum going, and everything is clicking."

Aramis Ramirez hit a solo homer off the left-field foul pole, and Corey Patterson went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for the Cubs, who built a 10-0 lead by the fourth inning.

Nomar Garciaparra, who had missed three straight games because of a strained left wrist, went 0-for-4 and came out following a 1-hour, 4-minute rain delay in the seventh.

Milwaukee is on its longest losing streak since dropping nine in a row from July 15-23, 2002.

Chris Capuano (6-8) gave up seven runs and six hits in 1 1-3 innings, his shortest outing this season. Five days earlier, the Cubs had eight runs and eight hits against him in 4 1-3 innings at Wrigley Field.

Capuano hurt his left elbow in the second inning.

"I don't know if he's a DL candidate or not," Brewers manager Ned Yost said.

Capuano has been bothered by the elbow all season.

"The same thing as before. Stress, discomfort. It's just not letting me pitch," he said.

Lee's second grand slam this season and this sixth of his career gave the Cubs a 7-0 lead in the second. He also hit a slam against Cincinnati on April 19.
