Pirates ride Ward's bat to win over Brewers

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers held a team meeting for the second straight day, hoping it would help them end their long losing streak.

They might have to meet for another.

Daryle Ward homered twice and had five RBI and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Milwaukee 5-1 Monday night, sending the Brewers to their 12th straight loss.

"It's getting pretty bad about how frustrated we are," first baseman Lyle Overbay said. "We're looking at one another and saying, 'What else can go wrong?'"

After losing 10-0 at Philadelphia Sunday, the Brewers held a meeting at which manager Ned Yost said he didn't see much intensity in his team. Yost tried it again Monday with a pregame meeting before Milwaukee began a seven-game homestand.

But the team continued to slump at the plate, and fell behind early as Ward hit a two-run homer in the first off Ben Hendrickson (0-6) and a three-run shot in the seventh off reliever Mike Adams.

Milwaukee tied its NL record for consecutive losses. The franchise mark for consecutive losses is 14 in 1994, when the team played in the American League.

The losing streak can be attributed to poor defense, pitching breakdowns and being the worst-hitting team in the NL. The Brewers have scored only seven runs in their last five games.

Josh Fogg (9-9) scattered five hits in 6

shutout innings for his third win in four starts.

"Josh has been throwing the ball extremely well his last four or five outings," Pittsburgh manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He's really stepped up and given us some quality innings and tonight was no different."

Jack Wilson singled with one out in the first and Ward followed with his 13th homer to make it 2-0.

"You want to be the team to get on top early, and it felt good to hit that one," Ward said.

With two outs in the seventh, Jason Kendall singled, chasing Hendrickson. Adams relieved and allowed a single to Jack Wilson before Ward hit his 14th homer and gave Pittsburgh a 5-0 lead.

Ward also walked twice and was hit by a pitch.

Bill Hall hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth off Jose Mesa for Milwaukee's only run.

Notes:

Hendrickson hit two batters in the first three innings. When he batted in the bottom of the third, Fogg's first pitch was high and inside, prompting plate umpire Jim Joyce to warn both dugouts. ... Ward's career high for RBIs is six on April 3, 2001, against Milwaukee while he was with Houston. ... Pittsburgh has won 10 of 13 against Milwaukee this year.
