Pirates rally to beat Brewers

MILWAUKEE - Ty Wigginton's two-out infield single drove home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 Wednesday night.

After Craig Wilson hit a two-out pinch-hit homer in the ninth to tie it at 2-all, the Pirates loaded the bases off rookie Jeff Bennett in the 10th on Jack Wilson's leadoff single and walks to Daryle Ward and Rob Mackowiak.

Second baseman Keith Ginter fielded Wigginton's ground ball up the middle and tried to flip to shortstop Craig Counsell for the forceout, but the flip was late and wide, hitting second-base umpire Jim Joyce instead.

Jose Castillo followed with a two-run double off Bennett (1-5).

Salomon Torres (7-4) picked up the win with a perfect ninth and Jose Mesa picked up his 36th save in 41 chances.

Wilson sent a 1-0 pitch from Dan Kolb over the left field wall for his 26th homer of the season, denying Victor Santos the win and Kolb his 36th save, which would have moved him within one of Milwaukee's franchise record set by Bob Wickman in 1999.

The Brewers, who snapped a 12-game losing streak Tuesday night, have not won back-to-back home games for the first time since sweeping the Chicago Cubs July 5-7.

Santos gave up one run on eight hits in six-plus innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Since the All-Star break, Santos has not received much run support - 26 runs in 10 starts - and he's won just twice.

Scott Podsednik and Gary Bennett each atoned for earlier blunders when they put the Brewers ahead 2-1 in the fifth. Bennett singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Podsednik's single.

In the third, Bennett trotted to first as he watched his fly ball hit the wall in right-center field, then slowed again on his way to second, figuring right fielder Rob Mackowiak's throw would be cut off. It wasn't and he was out by a step.

Podsednik misplayed Daryle Ward's RBI double to center that gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

The Brewers tied it in the home half on Geoff Jenkins' RBI double to the same spot, over center fielder Tike Redman's head.

Jenkins' strong throw in the fifth on pitcher Ryan Vogelsong's one-out single forced Ty Wigginton to stop at third, and he was stranded when Ward popped out to first with the bases full and two outs.

Vogelsong allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Counsell returned to the Brewers' lineup after a day off but went 0-for-4, extending his hitless streak to 25 at-bats.

Notes:

It was Craig Wilson's 10th career pinch-hit home run, extending the franchise record. ... OF Dave Krynzel, who struck out as a pinch-hitter in the 10th, arrived from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, the first of the Brewers' heralded minor league prospects to reach the big leagues for what's expected to be an extended stay. The team's top draft pick in 2000 missed several months this year with a broken foot, so he'll head to the Arizona Fall League for the third time after this season. "I'll be a veteran of the Fall League," he said. ... RHP Ben Hendrickson, who is 0-6 in six appearances for Milwaukee, was named the Most Valuable Pitcher in the International League after going 11-3 with a 2.02 ERA at Indianapolis. ... Pirates LHP Dave Williams was activated from the 15-day DL (ribs) and will start Thursday against the Brewers.
