Cranberry man taking aim at running 5,000 races

As with most active runners, you set long term goals. When you meet those goals, then you go farther.

Mitch Radella of Cranberry Township is one of those runners.

Radella, 40, did what most runners dream about: run a race in every state.

It doesn't matter what the distance, but for Radella, his range fell anywhere between a 5K (3.1 miles) to the marathon (26.2 miles).

But what made it even more special for Radella is that he accomplished this feat about five years ago.

"That wasn't my goal when I first started running," said Radella, who ran at Quigley High School and one season at Gannon University.

"I didn't have a set time to do it, but once I had 35 to 40 states, I figured I could do it."

Radella's final state to finish the job? Arkansas.

"They were usually spread out," said Radella. "I'd usually do one or two at a time. I wasn't concentrating on any one area."

Radella realizes that many runners have achieved this feat and there's even a club for marathoners who do.

Radella runs so many races that he doesn't have to run very much during the week. By his count, he competed in 155 races last year and, entering last weekend, he had 122 already in the bag for this year.

"I usually run more than one a week, but it's not that much, mostly 5Ks. The mileage is not that much."

But don't think that Radella doesn't turn it up from time to time. Of his 122 races, nine have been marathons.

So, by racing every weekend, what's Radella's next big goal?

"I want to get 5,000 races. I have over 2,100 now," said Radella. "At this rate, it'll take until I'm 60, then my knees will give out."
