Firefighter, owners douse fire at garage

A firefighter and homeowners teamed up to put out a garage fire at a home in Center Township early Thursday morning, authorities said.

No one was injured but the fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage. The fire has been ruled accidental, but a definitive cause is apparently unknown.

A 911 call came in about 12:50 a.m. for a fire in an attached garage at a home on Halland Terrace, just off Route 8 between the Clearview Mart Flea Market and St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church.

Shawn Milkovich, an assistant chief for the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, lives nearby and was first on the scene in his private vehicle.

“The (vinyl) siding and a portion of the garage, the front corner closest to the house, was on fire,” he said.

Milkovich armed himself with a garden hose that was at the house and attacked the fire. Homeowner Christopher Dimun and his wife filled buckets of water from the kitchen sink.

In turn, Milkovich threw the water onto the fire. Their combined efforts worked and halted the blaze in its tracks, stopping it from spreading to the house.

Fire crews showed up a short time later and cleaned up the aftermath. The ceiling of wood and concrete garage was pulled down to make sure the fire was out.

There were no vehicles in the garage and the minimal contents were apparently not damaged by the fire.

The Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District assisted at the scene. Unionville crews were back at the station about 2:40 a.m.
