Bonds hits No. 712 in 5-3 loss to Padres
SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Bonds insists the Babe is far from his mind, even if San Francisco's slugger is inching ever closer to matching Ruth's home run mark.
"No, not yet," Bonds said when asked if he's thinking about the magical 714.
There will be many more questions in the coming days as the media frenzy following Bonds' pursuit moves on to Milwaukee with him two away from tying Ruth.
Bonds hit his 712th homer in San Francisco's 5-3 loss to San Diego on Tuesday, and hinted he planned to play every day on the Giants' five-game road trip starting Wednesday against the Brewers.
He's eager to pass Ruth and perhaps temporarily end all the fanfare.
"Yeah, pretty much," he said. "Move on to something else."
Bonds sent a full-count, 96 mph fastball from Scott Linebrink to straightaway center for a solo shot that traveled an estimated 440 feet. Linebrink became the 419th pitcher to surrender a home run to Bonds.
"The fast ones I'm able to see. The slower ones I'm missing," Bonds said, smiling. "He challenged me one time too many."
