Drivers claim 3 points crowns

Carl McKinney of Cranberry Township win the Late Model B-Main race at Lernerville Speedway Friday.

BUFFALO TWP — Three points champions, two first-time winners and the end to one long victory drought.

It all added up to a memorable Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.

Kevin Bolland (Modifieds), Butch Lambert (Pure Stocks) and Lynn Geisler (Late Models) clinched points titles in their respective divisions a week early — and each did it in a different fashion.

Bolland won his title from the pits, the victim of a five-car pileup on Turn 2 of the second lap. The mishap didn't cost him, however, as he entered the night with a 68-point lead.

His closest pursuer, Brian Swartzlander, had to pit late in the race with a flattened right rear tire and Tom Winkle of Mars, who began the evening third in points, fell victim to the same incident that took out Bolland.

While 19 cars started the feature, only eight finished it. Even two-time defending Modified points champion Dave Murdick, after charging from 17th to second in the feature, left the race with four laps remaining.

"Brand-new drive shaft and it broke,"Murdick muttered. "What are you gonna do?If Jimmy (Weller III) would have bobbled, I might have been there to take it."

Weller never bobbled, though, taking the lead from Mark Flick on Lap 3 and cruising easily to his first Modified feature win of the season at Lernerville.

It marked Weller's first win here since July 22 of last season.

"This has been a rough year for us,"Weller said. "I almost destroyed this car here on opening night. We had the race won last week and I gave it away late.

"Only eight cars finished?I wasn't aware of that. ... Maybe this win wasn't that great after all."

The victory marked the 31st career Lernerville Modified triumph for the driver of the No. 31 car.

Lambert hasn't had to worry about his luck this season. He clinched his second consecutive Pure Stocks points title in style, nipping Bob Lipinski at the finish line by using a strong push off Turn 4 inside.

The victory caps an incredibly consistent season for the Mars driver, who has picked up four feature wins, 13 top-five finishes and 10 heat race triumphs at Lernerville this year.

Lambert began the feature from the 11th position.

"I have to credit the guys in the garage,"Lambert said. "They do a fabulous job getting the car here."

Geisler echoed those sentiments after clinching the Late Model points title with a second-place finish in the feature. He had three restarts in the final two laps, but failed to get past Matt Lux of Franklin for the checkered flag.

Lux had passed Geisler on the 21st lap and scored his first career Lernerville Late Model feature win.

"It's OK. It's nice winning points," Geisler said. "It's more a tribute to the guys (in the pits) than the driver. Points championships are all about finishing races and having the best car."

Geisler secured his fifth career Late Model crown at the Sarver track, but his first since 1994.

Lux used the inside groove to find his way to victory lane.

"Every week, I have to buy new parts for my front end because I bang it up pretty good here,"Lux said. "Winning a feature at Lernerville means so much. We've come down here from Raceway 7 occasionally over the years and we were OK, but we weren't good.

"Coming down here consistently has made me get better."

Carl Bowser of Sarver, last year's Sprint driver Rookie of the Year at Lernerville, notched his first career feature win Friday.

Bowser started 10th, but inherited the lead on the 13th lap when then-leader Danny Holtgraver spun out coming off Turn 2. Bowser won the race going away from there, but nearly plowed into his father, Terry Bowser, in the No. 59 car with three laps remaining.

Instead, Terry Bowser joined his son in victory lane while crew members patted them on the back as they embraced.

"I used patience tonight. ... That's what Rod George always tells me to do,"Carl Bowser said. "That's what I did tonight."

Kevin Schaeffer finished second and will take an 18-point lead over Ed Lynch Jr., who finished sixth, into next Friday's final points night.

Lynch was nearly taken out of the feature on the opening lap as the No. 59 car lifted on to the rear of the No. 2L, flattening a tire and damaging a wing. But Lynch was able to hold the car together.

Notes: There were 89 cars in the pits. ... Carl Murdick of Butler won his first heat race of the year in this his 39th year of racing. ... There were 26 restarts and three red lights during the four features, but no injuries.
