Army and Yankee Stadium ended an association 40 years ago that included some of the most important games in the history of college football. With a new Yankee Stadium having opened this year, it appears the two will be reunited to continue that history.

According to the Times Herald-Record of Middletown, N.Y., multiple Army sources have confirmed that the team will play Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium in 2010. One source also said that Army will host one game at Yankee Stadium in 2011, 2012 and 2013, as well.

A news conference is scheduled for Monday at Yankee Stadium to reveal a "major announcement regarding college football."

"We've been talking to Bob (Beretta) and Kevin (Anderson) about games here and in other places," Notre Dame senior associate athletic director John Heisler told the Times-Herald Record Thursday. "We haven't got to the point where we have crossed all the T's and dotted all the I's. When we have something to announce, we will announce it."

Anderson is Army's athletic director and Beretta his associate.

Notre Dame athletic director John Swarbrick told The Associated Press that if the game took place, it would be a home game for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame expressed interest in May in playing at Yankee Stadium. Army has been in talks with Yankees officials since March about hosting a game there.

The Black Knights and Fighting Irish have been engaged in many memorable contests in their rivalry. One in particular was a 35-13 Notre Dame victory in 1913 at West Point that revolutionized college football when the Fighting Irish used the forward pass with a great deal of success.

Back in May, Swarbrick said that he hoped that the 100th anniversary of that game could be played at Yankee Stadium.

The two teams played at Yankee Stadium almost every year between 1925-46. The last time they met there was 1969, a 45-0 victory for Notre Dame. Neither team has played there since.

The last college football game at Yankee Stadium was in 1987, when Central State (Ohio) defeated Grambling, 37-21.
