Warriors spoil SV coach's debut

HARRISON CITY - It wasn't the start Ron Butschle was hoping for.

The Seneca Valley football coach watched his offense suffer three interceptions while his defense gave up 299 total yards and four touchdowns through the air - all within the first 22 minutes of the game.

The end result was a 42-6 defeat at the hands of the Penn-Trafford Warriors in Butschle's debut as Raiders' coach Friday night.

"Execution and effort," Butschle said. "That's what it came down to tonight. I was looking for those two things from our players and saw neither."

The bad execution began just moments into the game.

Seneca Valley received the opening kickoff but netted just seven yards in three plays, forcing a punt.

Before SV's Mark Renyck could get the ball off, however, Penn-Trafford's Joe Kolano broke through and blocked the kick. The Warriors set up shop at the Raiders' 36-yard line.

Three plays later, Tyler Huether hit Mike Tropiano with a swing pass and the running back turned it into a 21-yard scoring play.

Dustin Pozzuto added the point after and the Warriors had a quick 7-0 lead.

"It all started with that blocked punt," said Butschle. "It was all down hill after that."

"Special teams is an area of our game that we've been working very hard at," said Warriors' coach Art Tragesser.

The Raiders went three-and-out on their next two possessions and Huether answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kolano and a 69-yard scoring strike to Tim Cortazzo, respectively.

"Our defense was doing a great job against the run and the pass in that first half," said Tragesser.

Huether added two more touchdown passes in the second quarter and Kolano added a 32-yard interception return for a score off a Marshall Lee pass.

Tropiano capped his team's scoring with a 41-yard run. He ended the game with 104 yards on 12 carries.

With 7:23 remaining before halftime, the Raiders trailed 42-0.

Huether had an almost perfect half, going seven of eight for 156 yards and four scores.

"Obviously it's not going to be like this every week," Tragesser said of his quarterback's performance. "But he played well tonight."

The Raiders picked up their initial first down on their seventh drive of the game midway through the second quarter.

Evan Braithwaite carried the ball eight times for 50 yards on a drive that started at the Raiders' 20-yard line, only to have Lee's pass tipped and intercepted by Stephen Stefanik at the Warriors' 10-yard line with just over two minutes in the first half.

Seneca Valley avoided a shutout when junior Lee Layton scampered 23 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.

"When you get beat 42-6, you have no confidence in anything you do," said Butschle. "We've got to go back and find players who want to play. Whether they're seniors, juniors or sophomores, we need kids who will put forth an effort."

The Raiders play at Kiski Area next Friday.
