Kiski Area prepared for angry Raiders' squad

Dave Grimm knows what a lopsided loss can do to a football team.

That's why he believes his team is in for a battle Friday night.

While Grimm's Kiski Area Cavaliers were putting the finishing touches on a 27-10 win over Butler last Friday night, Seneca Valley was facing a long bus ride home after being dominated 42-6 at Penn-Trafford.

The two teams will square off Friday night at Davis Field in Vandergrift. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

"I'm expecting to see an angry team," Grimm said of the Raiders. "After losing like that, they'll be looking to take it out on us."

But to do that, Seneca Valley must turn productive practices into solid execution on both sides of the ball.

"We've been having very good practices for the past three weeks," said Raiders' coach Ron Butschle. "That's why I was so disappointed to see things turn out the way they did Friday night."

One player looking to put the first game behind him is Seneca's Marshall Lee.

The senior quarterback misfired on his first nine passes against Penn-Trafford, including two interceptions.

"A lot of things have to go well for a passing game to succeed," said Butschle. "But Marshall is the leader of this team and the best runner we've got.

"I told him when he sees a running lane to take it. When he sees a corner, take it."

The Raiders will be running against a four-man front.

"Right now we're rotating in some different guys just until we see which ones we should keep in there," said Grimm.

Kiski's offense will be led by junior tailback Nate Kriger (5-10, 160), who totaled 144 yards and a 7.6 average last week.

Spotting Kriger will be senior Danny Hess.

"Every once in a while, we like to give Nate a break by throwing Danny in there," said Grimm. "It's a change of pace because (Hess) is a power runner and Nate's a speed guy.

"It'll all depend on the defense we line up against."

Starting at quarterback for the Cavaliers will be junior Mychal Skinner, who returned a punt 95 yards for a score and rushed 15 yards for another against Butler.

Skinner also plays defense, joining fellow safety Tim Van Horne and cornerbacks Kriger and Josh Humphrey in Kiski's secondary.

"With Nate and Mychal, they should both start on defense, but we'll rotate in a few guys just to give them a breather after a few series," said Grimm.

"We told the kids that last week is behind us," said Butschle. "We can only concern ourselves with what is ahead of us."

The Cavaliers chances of making the WPIAL playoffs for a fourth straight year were questioned before the season. Opening up with two straight wins, albeit non-conference wins, would be a step forward.

"That would be a big boost to this team," added Grimm.

Seneca Valley and Kiski Area have met seven times, including the most recent meeting in the 2002 WPIAL Quad A playoffs, a 31-14 Raiders' win.

The Cavaliers hold a slim 4-3 advantage in the series.

Seneca Valley at Kiski Area

Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Streak: The Cavaliers have made the WPIAL playoffs the last three seasons, losing in the first round each time.

Stat: Kiski averaged 5.4 yards per rushing attempt in last Friday's 27-10 win over Butler.

Strategy: The Cavaliers will look to execute most of their rushing plays over the more experienced left side of their offensive line.

Speaking: "Last year, we played a lot of close games. So many of these younger players didn't see much playing time. But they've done well so far and we're pleased with the progress they've made." - Kiski Area coach Dave Grimm
