Seneca's defeat not a total loss

VANDERGRIFT - On the surface, it was another lopsided loss for the Seneca Valley football team.

But unlike its season-opening defeat at Penn-Trafford last week, this setback at least produced several positives the team can build upon.

With Kiski Area leading 28-0 after just one quarter, the Raiders concentrated on their passing game and were able to move the ball through the air, albeit in a 35-3 loss Friday at Davis Field.

Seneca Valley quarterback Marshall Lee completed 12 of 28 passes for 145 yards, a total no SV quarterback has reached in the last three years.

Lee's favorite target proved to be junior Zach Duggan, who grabbed seven receptions for 100 yards.

"Offensively, we moved the ball," said Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle. "I'm never going to say I'm happy with a loss, but there were some positives for us tonight."

But Butschle was well aware of the negatives as well.

Kiski churned out 310 rushing yards, including 137 from Nate Kriger on just eight carries.

The junior tailback opened the scoring by racing 67 yards around the right end for a score on the first series of the game. The extra point attempt was blocked, but Kiski held a 6-0 lead just 56 seconds into the contest.

"I was looking for (Seneca Valley) to come in here fired up after their loss last week," said Cavaliers coach Dave Grimm. "But our kids came out and set the tone right from the start."

A Raider fumble and a turnover on downs on the next two drives led to two more Kiski touchdowns. Kriger's 11-yard run and Joe Scott's 7-yard reception from quarterback Mychal Skinner gave the home team a three-score cushion.

"We missed a lot of tackles, and we had them in some third-and-long situations, which they converted into first downs." said Butschle. "We can't let that happen."

The lead grew to 35-0 by the time the Raiders took over at their own 41-yard line midway through the second quarter.

Lee completed four passes on the ensuing drive, the last being a 27-yard strike to Duggan that moved the ball to the Cavaliers' 26-yard line.

After failing to move any farther in three downs, Mark Renyck came on to boot a 43-yard field goal, his team's only points of the game.

The high point of the second half for the Raiders began with a turnover.

Facing a third-and-goal from the 20-yard line, Skinner found Tim Van Horn near the goal line.

SV's Anthony Eonta hit the receiver immediately after catching the pass and, as the defensive back struggled to save the touchdown, the ball came loose and the Raiders recovered on their own one-yard line.

From there, Seneca Valley set out on a 14-play, 63-yard drive against Kiski's first-team defense.

The drive stalled on the Cavaliers' 36-yard line, but the effort did not go unnoticed.

"Our kids didn't quit," said Butschle. "They came out in the second half and played hard."

The Raiders begin Quad North play next Friday by hosting Bethel Park.
