Freeport hopes to keep pitching shutouts
Two games, two shutouts.
It's a great way to open the season, but the Freeport Yellowjackets will host its Allegheny Conference opener against Deer Lakes Friday at 7:30 p.m.
"This has been a pleasant surprise," said Freeport coach Bill Dillen. "We have some nice young players on defense and we have some starters from last year so it's a good mix.
"Any time you start out with two shutouts, that's nice to have," he added.
Freeport blanked McGuffey 28-0 last week as four different players scored touchdowns: Nate Kurtz, Kory Micholas, Ian Kaminski and Brady Sherrieb, the latter off a pass from Kiel Conjack.
Freeport limited the Highlanders to just 93 total yards.
Ford City is coming off a 27-7 victory over Waynesburg to even its record to 1-1.
Derek Bush ran for two scores, Aaron bell ran for another and Erik Densmore led the team with 87 yards on 10 carries.
Quarterback Jesse Stivason only completed 1 of 4 passes for 30 yards, but it went for a touchdown.
"He can throw if he has to," said Dillen. "He hasn't been able to yet. And he can run. It's a nice combination.
"They're a good football team," said Dillen. "We'll have our work cut out for us," he added.
With the exhibition season done, Dillen is pleased where his team is heading into conference play.
"Absolutely. We have no injuries and we're going in fresh," said Dillen. "Coming out of the gate with two wins is great. It's a real nice way to get started."
Greenville (1-0) at Grove City (0-1), 7 p.m., Friday -
Grove City High School football coach Jeff Bell is still trying to figure out what happened against Harbor Creek.
Despite 142 yards rushing and 105 receiving by Jesse Alfreno, the Eagles blew a 14-7 lead at the half and coughed up 27 second-half points in a 34-21 loss.
"Maybe we were overconfident going into the game," Bell said.
That won't happen this week against Greenville, which is coming off a 44-0 thumping over Seneca.
The Trojans led 37-0 at the half and had 315 yards rushing on just 29 carries.
Casey Nicklin had 95 yards on only four carries and Jared Zuschlag added 58 yards and two touchdowns.
As always, Greenville isn't very fancy under coach Bob Stone.
"We know what Greenville is going to do," Bell said. "They are not going to trick us. They run the plays they are good at and say, 'Stop it.'"
Greenville will also be shooting for a milestone Friday. A win will be the 500th in school history.
Union (0-1) at Keystone (0-1), 7 p.m. Friday
- The two teams combined to lose 93-0 last week.
And both teams gave up a slew of points in the first quarter.
The Golden Knights were down 40-0 after the first period in a 47-0 loss to Redbank Valley and Keystone watched Clarion score three touchdowns in a span of two minutes in the first quarter in a 46-0 loss.
Colton Davis enjoyed a solid game for Union, rushing for 70 yards on 13 carries. The Golden Knights were hurt by turnovers, coughing the ball up five times.
But Keystone and first-year coach Jason Nellis had some positives, too.
Mike Switzer threw for 133 yards.
Mohawk (0-2) at Summit Academy (0-2), 12:30 p.m., Saturday -
Mohawk was blanked by Beaver Falls 7-0 last week and has been shut out in both its contests this year.
A bright spot in the Knights' 41-14 loss to New Brighton was quarterback Zach Roberts, who ran for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and added a conversion pass to Gregory Slade.
