Black Hawks clobber SV

JACKSON TWP - Bethel Park had a huge advantage against Seneca Valley Friday.

Playing on a short field will do that.

The Black Hawks began six drives inside Seneca Valley territory and scored four touchdowns en route to a 30-8 victory in the Quad North football opener for both teams.

"It's frustrating. That's the only feeling I have right now," said Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle. "We put ourselves in bad situations.

"Turnovers, a blocked kick, penalties. Then they get a big play, and you're really in trouble against a good team like that," he added.

In the other two instances, the Black Hawks missed on a 48-yard field goal attempt on the opening drive of the game. The second came when the Raiders' Marshall Lee returned an interception for a touchdown.

"Our defense definitely did a great job," said Bethel Park coach Jeff Metheny.

Chris Boris led the Black Hawks' offensive charge with 82 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

The game was scoreless entering the second quarter and the Raiders at the 50-yard line. Evan Braithwaite fumbled the ball on the first play from scrimmage and the Black Hawks (2-1, 1-0) recovered on the SV 47.

Six plays later, Boris scored from 11 yards out.

The Raiders (0-3, 0-1) began the ensuing drive on their own 14-yard line. Lee ran for 2 yards and Lee Layton for 4 yards before Lee was sacked for a 10-yard loss.

On the Raiders' punt attempt, the ball sailed over Mark Renyck's head and out of the end zone for a safety and a 9-0 score.

On the free kick, Bethel Park set up shop at the Raider 41. Six plays later, Boris scored again, this time from 4 yards out with 5:01 left before halftime.

Andrew Wawrzkowicz connected on his second extra point for a 16-0 Black Hawks lead.

When the Raiders went three and out to open the third quarter, an 11-yard punt set Bethel Park up at the SV 40.

A 2-yard loss by Boris was followed by 12- and 8-yard passes by L.J. Michalski to B.J. Bytner.

Boris then scored from 22 yards out and Michalski found Bytner for the conversion pass.

On the Black Hawks' next possession, which started on the SV 42, Lee picked off Michalski's pass on a fourth-and-6 from the 25 and ran it back 68 yards for the Raiders' lone score with 1:42 left in the third quarter.

The play seemed to spark the Raiders, who then forced Bethel Park to punt after three plays. On the Raiders' first play from scrimmage on their own 37, Lee threw a deep sideline pass to Jim Paulin, who outjumped the defender, but the official ruled Paulin didn't hold onto the ball when he hit the ground.

Two plays later, the Raiders attempted to punt, but Bytner blocked the kick.

The Black Hawks started at the SV 38 and needed 12 plays before Boris scored with 5:24 left in the game.

"This to me is growing pains," said Butschle. "The hard part is trying to keep the kids positive and getting better.

"To be honest, we've got to look for improvement. We take one step forward, then take two steps back. Hopefully, we won't make as many mistakes," he added.

The Raiders finished with just 72 total yards and had minus-3 on the ground with just three first downs.

"I told the kids 'No one is quitting,'" said Butschle. "I'm disappointed and they're disappointed. Tomorrow is a new day and we'll see the mistakes we made. They were obvious (Friday)."
