From glory to gory

Bob Fromm remembers the glory days of Sharon High School football.

As a quarterback and defensive back in the early 1990s, Fromm enjoyed winning seasons, playoff berths and state title hopes.

And annual wins against Slippery Rock.

But all that has changed. Those winning seasons have turned into losing ones. Those state title aspirations are distant memories.

After 14 straight wins over Slippery Rock, the Tigers have now lost three straight to a foe it had never lost to before that streak.

So the powers that be at Sharon have turned to Fromm to try to restore those glory days.

"Our goal back then was not to give up 100 yards rushing," Fromm said. "Last year, Slippery Rock put 303 on us."

Sharon hosts Slippery Rock at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Another 303 yard rushing will not bode well for the Tigers, who have started 0-2 under Fromm's new regime.

"We knew it was going to be an uphill battle," Fromm said. "I tell you what, I think this league this year is going to be one where I truly believe anyone can beat anyone. The teams that get better day to day, week to week will win some games."

Slippery Rock coach Clyde Conti also believes Sharon is a team that is being unfairly compared to, well, the glory Sharon teams of past.

"People want to compare Sharon to Sharon," Conti said. "They say Sharon is down. Down compared to what? All I know is that Sharon is very, very talented at the skill positions."

Junior tailback A.J. Wilson bounced back from a rough start in the opener with a solid game against Hickory in a 28-15 loss.

But the Tigers may be without quarterback Mike Snyderwine, who suffered a knee injury.

That would thrust sophomore Desmond Jennings into the starting role.

"I hope (the injury to Snyderwine) isn't serious," Fromm said. " He was the only pure quarterback we had last year, and he was playing somewhat by default last season. He took his lumps and learned from them."

Slippery Rock (1-1) took some lumps last week against Reynolds, who shut down the Rockets' running game and won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball in a 19-6 win.

But Conti is looking at that loss and the game against Sharon as a test of his team's resolve.

"I don't think losing a football game is nearly as important as how we react to it," Conti said. "These kids haven't really gone through any adversity and it will be interesting to see how they respond. I know they are capable of responding."

Fromm said using the Reynolds film as a blueprint to stop Slippery Rock is not feasible.

"It's tough because we run a different scheme," Fromm said. "But you can show them the film and show them what a disciplined defense does, control their gaps and do their assignments. That's been our Achilles' heel."

Fromm is particularly wary of the wing-T attack, which can be nightmarish to stop when a team runs it right.

The Rockets run it right.

"They execute that offense," Fromm said. "With the wing-T, you either execute it or your just running around."
