Running games key as Redbank Valley invades Moniteau
Redbank Valley coach Ed Wasilowski sees his team's task as clear-cut Friday night.
Keep running the ball as effectively as it has been. And keep Moniteau from doing the same thing.
The Bulldogs (4-2 overall, 3-1 in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference) travel to Moniteau (4-2, 3-1) for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Warriors have dropped their last two games while Redbank has cruised to three straight wins.
"Our running game has been effective because we've been able to distribute the ball," Wasilowski said. "Our offensive line has really come together.
"But that (Moniteau fullback) Matt Schandelmeier is a horse. I doubt we'll be able to stop him. We definitely have to control him."
Skyler Smith leads Redbank with 94 carries for 480 yards and nine touchdowns. Brandon Johnston has 33 carries for 431 yards and six TDs. Bryce Miller has more than 400 yards rushing as well.
Redbank uses a one-back, four-receiver set and puts numerous people in motion. The receivers serve as blockers in the running game.
The Bulldogs' ground game has been so dominant that quarterback Jason Smith averages only seven passes per game.
"I've been on this coaching staff for 20 years or so and we've always been able to throw the football," Wasilowski said. "This is the first time we've struggled in that area."
Moniteau's offense drove to the 20-yard line five times against Karns City, but scored only once. The Warriors failed to complete a pass and Garth Kohlmeyer was intercepted three times.
"Karns City probably played its best game of the year and we didn't play very well," Moniteau coach Steve Wilson said. "It was apparent our passing game wasn't there, so we relied on our ground game.
"Our passing game has been strong. That was one game. We know we can throw the football."
Wilson said his cornerbacks - Greg Kepple and Matt Pry - have been playing solid football all year.
"We know they can cover, so we're going back to the basics defensively," he said. "Everyone has his job to do. If everyone executes, we can contain their ground game."
Redbank's defense has been forcing three or four turnovers per game. Linebacker Zach Wanniger has had a pair of multi-takeaway games.
Middle linebacker Brock Shaffer leads the Bulldogs in tackles. Defensive end Ryan Toth and defensive tackle Danny Jordan have also been standouts.
"Defense has been the strength of our team," Wasilowski said. "We gave up 20 points to A-C Valley, but they recovered a blocked punt in our end zone and scored another touchdown with 38 seconds left.
"Sharpsville is the only other team to score 20 on us and they're one of the top teams in the western part of the state."
"They have a great middle linebacker who can make things happen," Wilson said. "We have to account for him."
Redbank leads the series between the teams 26-5-3. The Bulldogs are 19-1-2 against Moniteau since 1978, the Warriors' lone win being a 20-15 decision in 2001.
"It'll be a big boost to our kids if we can win this game against a quality conference opponent," Wilson said. "They're coming to our place on our senior night and that will help us.
"Our team has been supported very well by this community."
